About the process

The Campus Master Plan emerges from extensive community engagement, careful analysis and collaborative visioning. This comprehensive process generates innovative ideas and practical solutions to meet our community’s goals while advancing K-State’s educational mission.

What is a Campus Master Plan?

A Campus Master Plan is a strategic roadmap that guides the physical development of our university. This comprehensive planning effort will shape K-State’s Manhattan, Salina and Olathe campuses by establishing both short-term improvements and long-term vision. The plan is a physical extension of the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan, helping us leverage our strengths while addressing current challenges and future opportunities.

Have we ever done this before?

While K-State has undergone various planning initiatives throughout its history, this represents our most comprehensive and inclusive campus master planning effort. Building on decades of growth and learning, we’re taking a fresh, holistic approach that considers all aspects of campus life and community connection.

Why is this important to me?

Whether you’re a student, faculty member, staff member, or community member, this plan will directly impact your daily experience at K-State. The master plan will guide decisions about new buildings, renovated spaces, transportation, sustainability initiatives and community connections. Your input helps ensure the final plan reflects the needs and aspirations of everyone who calls K-State home.

Process Phases

Each phase built upon the previous one to generate ideas and deepen our understanding of the issues and opportunities that will inform the Campus Master Planning effort. We appreciate everyone’s efforts and participation in the formation of the Campus Master Plan.

Understand

Discovery forms the foundation of excellent planning. During this phase, we’re conducting a comprehensive assessment of K-State’s current state, including:

  • Facilities condition and capacity analysis
  • Space utilization studies
  • Infrastructure and systems evaluation
  • Community connectivity assessment
  • Sustainable opportunities identification

This deep dive into our existing assets and challenges provides the data-driven foundation for all future planning decisions.

Explore

With a solid understanding of our current state, we’re testing innovative solutions and exploring possibilities. This phase includes:

  • Scenario development and testing
  • Alternative development strategies
  • Systems improvement options
  • Space activation concepts
  • Community engagement and feedback integration

Through collaborative exploration, we identify the most promising directions for K-State’s future development.

Realize

The final phase synthesizes the strongest ideas into a unified Campus Master Plan. This comprehensive document will include:

  • Specific development recommendations
  • Renovation and reuse strategies
  • Infrastructure improvement plans
  • Implementation timelines and priorities
  • Flexible frameworks for future adaptation

For years, this completed plan will serve as K-State’s guide for physical development and campus enhancement.
